romina,
holy sheet people are being let go left, right and center at the office. each day i come in expecting to get laid off. scary times here. i have my 3 month check-in meeting with the hr department lady on monday. AHHH please do not fire me!! it's like a game of spin the bottle except when it lands on you, instead of getting a sexy kiss, you get HERPES and a severe case of depression.

potentially unemployed in the very near future,

roro,

jonny lee miller was a babe in that movie, congratulations to him on his newfound fatherhood.

this week at work we had a christmas dinner party with editorial and production, then a christmas party with the whole publishing company, then a breakfast party with a reggae band playing christmas tunes for the whole building and today we have our christmas editorial staff lunch. soooo much free food and booze.

in honour of gluttony, here is a neat little video on the future of food.

hey romina,

how is your life?

i haven't had much time for introspection lately. when i'm not working, i'm interneting and when i'm not interneting, i'm writing and when i'm not writing, i'm cleaning and when im not doing any of those things, i try to sleep. i have not slept for a very long time and have been in this strange quasi-awake state for the past three weeks. anyway, there are many things i want to fix in my life right now and i'm having a difficult time figuring out where to start.

what are three things you would like to fix in your life?

i'll tell you mine, if you tell me yours.

p.s. remember when i was super into skateboarding? i listened to crappy punk and ska music while attempting to olly in the backyard... on the grass because the concrete was just waaaay too scary. hilarious.

p.p.s. shit, i just remembered going to chapters every weekend and dropping a wad of cash on skateboard magazines. there was this lanky skateboarder i had a crush on in high school who shared both my birth date and my music class instrument, the alto saxophone. you totally know who im talking about. i would accidentally/on purpose drop magazines in front of him hoping he would recognize my coolness and ask me to be his girlfriend. LOL. is it sad that my plan sort of worked?

rom,

umm i wish i was creative and patient enough to make something like this.

you better be studying.

also, list of halloween costume ideas:

1. sarah palin's pregnant daughter bristol. (i need someone to dress up as my hick hockey player hubbie.)
2. april from teenage mutant ninja turtles (an old idea of mine, does it still have staying power?)
3. catwoman from the retro batman show (stolen from a girl at comicon)

i dont know. not feeling very creative right now.

stefano told me he's going to dress up as xena. and his group of guy friends are dressing up as "sexy halloween costumes", like the "sexy nurse" and "sexy red riding hood." genius! dressing up as a halloween costume, love it.

dear maria, i miss you like those italian kinder suprises!

maria!
i'm so behind on life! but i've come to make up for it by saying... your movie looks phenomenal; i'm not so interested in the twilight hype (because i cannot replace harry potter); i started watching true blood with anna paquin and though she is kinda annoying especially in the first couple episodes i've began to quite enjoy the show; I hate her name in the show, soo-kie, because the way everyone says it over and over again angers me; recently I've been listening to remixes by ratatat, which i love. I need some new music in my life, any suggestions?; Halloween is next week, what is your costume idea?

peace,
romina

Saturday, October 18, 2008

hey romina,

remember last night while at the club, bottle full of bub, i was telling you about the opening film at the toronto after dark film fest?

Let The Right One In is a delicate love story about a bullied blond-haired little boy..... and swedish vampires.

there has been a lot of hype over this film in the past year and after seeing it finally, i can say the attention is well-deserved. we both know how much i love vampire movies but this... this was something else. clever, finespun, visually poignant and wry, with a dash of gore and an elegiac ending that will make your heart ache. its only downfall was the length. at the two hour mark, my legs began to cramp and you could tell the audience was getting shifty. the fact that bloor cinema was PACKED and we were sitting on the balcony at the very back surrounded by hot and sticky people didn't help either.

you must see this film. there was a reason the show was sold out. i heard that some relatively big shot director is going to remake it a la quarantine for north american audiences. absolutely RIDICULOUS. just read the subtitles, people.

see the movie, before it is ruined with a remake.

(vampire)bat crazy,

maria

ps have yet to see twilight... i don't think it will compare to let the right one in at all but i am SO excited to see this thing here. i feel its going to be like what lost boys: the tribe should have been.

p.p.s. martiniboys should hire me.

maria
fyi, romina.

two of my favourite people-in-the-world-whom-i-have-never-met, spike jonze and dave eggers, have combined powers and created a movie adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are.

where the wild things are is a dark and disturbingly awesome short story that would translate so well to the silver screen, especially in the hands of the director who created these and the author who wrote this.

the movie was suppose to have come out this month but the brothers of warner delayed its release because it was too weird. here is some old footage that actually looks and feels nothing like the movie soooo probably a waste of time to watch.

supposedly at the secret test screening, children cried and asked their parents to leave.

umm.. AWESOME? seeing as the monsters in the story once gave my six year old self nightmares, their responses seem more then appropriate and perhaps stand testament to the truthfulness of the adaptation.

the millions of dollars budgeted movie is now being re-shot by mr. jonze and expected to come out in 2009.

booooo reshoots.

thanking goldblum it's friday,

maria

p.s. i hate people who baby children and talk to them like they're idiots. kids are smart. they can handle a lot more then their stupid parents think they can.
p.p.s. home alone mom catherine o'hara voices a character in the film. hilarious!

rominoff,

i always wondered why mom would get mad at me whenever i sang this song.

I love your body
Not so much I like your mind

When will you shut up and when will we go

anyway you have to start signing your name on these things here or else people won't be able to differentiate between the two of us!! i've already received some complaints from our readership.... ahem.. um... well, i've received complaints from myself.

i wanna make you smile...

remember singing this in italia.... at zia's house....

and i use to love old school janet, and this is my favourite video she ever made:

i guess what i'm doing is reminiscing... to a time when the most important question seemed to be who is your favourite ninja turtle, or what trouble are we gonna cause today?
a mix of everything i miss:
all saints, saturday morning cartoons (doug, recess, etc.), TGIF (abc family programing), italy, aqualand, dr.bombay, much dance mix, blink 182, no doubt, mr. vain, 90s' music videos, three ninjas, J.T.T, my poster of leo dicaprio, less crazy lauryn hill, TLC, macaulay culkin, my girl 1 & 2, thinking ghost was the saddest movie ever, mcdonalds' movies, not having to make plans or pay for said plans, going to movies with cousins, the zone (that amazing play place we went to), fresh prince, full house, saved by the bell, playgrounds, being flipped upside down by relatives, waterworld, willy wonka and the chocolate factory, fern gully, putt-putt (i would like to play this computer game again), sunday school on saturday followed by baskin robbins or swiss chalet, tying sweaters around my waist, backwards caps, bright coloured overalls, and fort-making.

anyways, your third painting is currently my computer background and i already have gotten compliments on it. don't worry, i gave you credit for it. anyways i have to continue reading, sadly, for school!

calm down little napoleon

someone's suffering from a napoleon complex and i think it's a little person named maria.
hahaha, i'm fantastic..... but no seriously, let's get down to the nitty gritty!

current mood music: andrew bird i know you already know him maria, but i'm just reiterating his incredibleness. also, there is a new tv on the radio album about to release the same day as the kings of leon album!
an american version of jens lekman by the name of jeremy jay is on the prowl

quite similar if you ask me.
plus, im loving the wes anderson-influenced noah and the whale.
dear romina,

there is a new intern at work.
she is doing what i was doing only a month ago.
this is weeeiiiird. i think she is older then me.
omgg i am her boss. well, maybe boss is pushing it.

if only i was still taking my fourth year women studies class, i could write a freaking essay on this skit here... romina, did you watch snl or were you too busy partying? i caught a bit of it, the only bit with "host" michael phelps. oh, phelpsy. get back in your pool and do some laps. leave comedy to the real people with, you know, flaws.

things to do in toronto (or aptly, things i am doing in toronto): september/october, part one.

- queen west art crawl (great way to furnish my new apartment. yayy.)
- international festival of authors (omg omg omg a reading by joe dunthorne? perfect opportunity to profess my love. other notables in attendance: don mckellar, chip kidd, mia kirshner (a-hem), plus lots moreee...)
- sharon jones & the dap kings (yes, i will be attending THIS.)
- zombie walk & toronto after dark film fest madness (i am TOTALLY going to see this ridiculous thing here. bonus points for anyone who can tell me who the lead actor is. romina, if you don't know this, you are not my sister.)
- watch toronto fc probably get their asses handed to them by the houston dynamos at bmo field.
- grab a bite to eat at the shitload of new restaurants & cafes that have opened up recently, like oddfellows, nota bene and moroco chocolat.

PLUS DONT GET FIRED!

EXTRA: my friend just sent me this link of a really cute foreign comic check it out called Mister Bookseller

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

dear romina,

i am procrastinating at work with the following:

- simon rich articles (it is very possible to love a thing while being extremely jealous of the person who created the thing.)
- hilarious internet series created by the aforementioned simon rich along with seth meyers and bill hader
- the latest episode of dexter (mehhh, i was not too impressed. i don't want to spoil anything, but the crazy ending was not as crazy as it was sooo predictable.)

gonna get fired,
maria
dear romina,

new and pretty enjoyable cool kids song.

i wish i had a secret talent. when i was younger, my friend rented a skating rink for his twelfth birthday. definite high point of my junior school career. my biggest regret as an eleven year old was having quit skating lessons before i could, well, skate. i still think it would have been so cool if i had nonchalantly put on my skates, did a couple laps of the rink and then flawlessly executed a triple axel like it was no thang, simultaneously wowing my peers and giving them the impression that i would be soo destined for greatness (if i was the type to care about that sort of thing.) sighhhh. i am secretly talentless.

kristi yamaguchi was my hero in the early nineties. tara lapinski can suck it.

who loves you?

the toronto premiere was even better. i tried to find a video of it but couldn't because it's so brand spanking new. seriously i can't get franki valli songs out of my head--- and i don't mind that one bit! yes, classics are great.

tv on the radio is awesome-- as maria has kindly pointed out. i personally recommend the Bryan Hyde remix of 'staring at the sun.' it adds a tad bit more danceability to the song, which is always a good thing.

other then heading back to uni-- i'm looking forward to the kings of leon album coming out the sept. 23,

here is a little taste of the glory

an ode

dear romina,

i liked tv on the radio when i first heard staring at the sun in second year.
then i liked them even more when i stumbled upon their wolf like me video on muchmusic.
seeing them in concert probably turned my like into a little love.
hearing that their latest album was going to be called dear science made me smile.
after having listened to their latest single online , i realized my love is going to last forever.

lovingly,
maria

Saturday, August 16, 2008

dear romina,

classic!

rominaaa, i bet you didn't know that i stole a bottle of wine from the basement and am drinking in my room.

deviously,

maria

two.

okay! so, i'm finally posting a reply to maria's last post which she did considerably fast after our first one together!
kudos to maria for mentioning m.ward (his voice is the epitome of sensitive man, i recommend his cover of 'let's dance'), as well as mentioning manga, which i really want to get into!

but back to all things me-- last night i saw avenue q at Elgin Theatre on Yonge in Toronto-- very entertaining i laughed and totally enjoyed the show moreso because my lovely friends got us $100 tickets for $30. i highly recommend the play, offensive and cute in all the right ways.

apparently, i have become addicted to the british. whether it be their tv shows (skins, extras), their witty books or their new wavey music.

music-wise, this summer i've been listening to the relaxed tunes of shwayze. i also found dr. dog to work well as cruising around music.
i'm gonna go soak up some sun-- while its still here, it's already becoming sooo cold, yuck!

some great comic genius in summer heights high

one and a half

so this might be a little soon for a second post, but i wanted to share the things roro and i picked up at the book store today with the world

1. nana - i want to get into girly romantic manga and this seems like a good place to start.

ummm romina has the other books in her room and i dont remember what they are called, maybe she can fill you in?

anyway, here are other things i like right now:

1. the kinks
2. m. ward - roro and i saw she & him at the phoenix a couple weeks ago. although, zooey deschanel was absolutely delightful, the impenetrable m. ward with his whispery, velvety voice stole the show and my heart.

ummmm when i was originally thinking about what to blog, i had a huge list of things in my head and now i don't remember anything.

ummm so maybe this post isn't worthy of posting just yet.

OH i thought of more things to add to the quasi-list.

-joss whedon's buffy: season eight comic - i'm addicted, like "going to the comic book store every week to check if a new issue has been released" addicted
- brian K. vaughan, especially ex machina

as you can see, i am really into comics right now.

does it have anything to do with the mini crush i have on one of the boys who works at the comic book store that i frequent? ahem, perhaps...

OH and im watching beck like cah-ray-zee

also the wire. romina, START WATCHING THE WIRE ASAP! i want to talk about it with you.

list of favourite characters:

1. omar
2. snoop, bodie
3. mcnulty

there, that is all for now.

one.

romina said we should make our first post together and my response was "lame" but then she said "we have to" and i acquiesced.

so it was written so it shall be done- we shall share with the world all that is good like nacho libre

romina, that doesn't make any sense.

our mom wants to know who we're talking to online.

this all started like the babysitters club as a bright idea- we wanted to share with each other our thoughts and likes through this magical tool called the internet, hence the blog.

romina just wants to use the word hence because she just watched a preview of the house bunny starring anna faris (a movie that i am actually SO excited to see. anna faris is, um, awesome. i have found the majority of movies she is in to range from funny to hilarious.)

this is kind of awkward because i am typing in front of romina and she is breathing very heavily.

we shall end our very first post, the first and last one together, with a little tribute to a great eighties group

we highly recommend tracing the thirty year plus history of the band via youtube clips. the visual maturity of the boys is extremely entertaining.

well, that's all for now.

um, how do we end this, roro?

aveda-ZING!
that is german for goodbye, thanks heidi klum for that lesson.

sure, whyyyy not.
